Let's Save Some Lives

We've had a twitter account for a while, but only recently have we been using it to try and get the word out about the dangers of cycling. Check this out, go on twitter and search the word "cyclist". Over half the tweets are about cyclists who were killed in accidents. It is ridiculous how many cyclists are getting killed, but not surprising. We've covered this before, but if you are riding a bike on a road with cars and going 20, 30, even 40 MPH under the speed limit, that is akin to playing Russian Roulette.

It's not safe. And there is no way to make it safe. There are a lot of idiots out there driving cars, many of them cyclists themselves. And if you think getting on a light weight, two wheeled, open vehicle with these people could ever be safe, you aren't very smart.

Let's pretend for a minute that cyclists aren't out just to create havoc on the roads. Let's pretend that they have somewhere to go and want to do so safely and in accordance with the rules of the road. I know, I know. Even if all this was the case.... what they are doing is still incredibly unsafe, and always will be.You can't be riding a bike 30 MPH under the limit on a 5 lane highway with hundreds of cars and do safely. It just isn't possible.

These people won't take themselves off the road, we have to do it for them. I am sick of reading about dead cyclists, who in the unlikely event they had people in there lives that cared about them, will now have sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, spouses and friends have to go on without their loved one. And what for? Just to anger some cagers? How is that worth it? Please, call your mayor, you city council person, your state senator and tell them you want safer roads for everyone by getting cyclists off the road. Doing so saves lives.

  3. How about more intensive driving tests to get rid of these "idiots" driving and more real bike lanes (not afterthoughts)? Sounds more reasonable than no bikes allowed anywhere.

  4. Who are these cyclists riding on 5-lane highways?

  5. Claiming that cyclists are unlikely to have families and loved ones is highly out of touch. I'm sorry you feel this way.

  6. This, without doubt, is one of the stupidest blogs I have ever seen. It is a shame that some people use foul language and insult you, but it is really no wonder: people read a truly idiotic blog and they feel provoked to get nasty.

None of the articles or statements posted on this blog are compatible with science or with modern transportation policy. You make yourself look like a damn fool.

Perhaps you're just 16 years old, just recently got your driver's license, and feel overtaxed by sharing the road. In that case, at least you are not in danger of getting fired when your boss finds out you waste your time on useless antics.

You should read a book one of these days. For starters, I recommend Tom Vanderbilt's book, "Traffic".
